Discussions & Notes

Items support threads for discussion and note-taking. Each thread can contain multiple replies, allowing a back-and-forth conversation directly on the item.

Thread Types

  • Comment — A public discussion message. Creating a comment requires the item.threads.add permission.
  • Note — An internal note attached to the item, useful for private or staff context. Notes are a separate thread type with their own permission channel (item.notes.*), distinct from comments.
  • Automated — Created by the system (for example, when an item's state changes or a branch or CR is linked).

Replies

Threads can have multiple messages (replies), keeping conversation organized in one place. Message author, body, and timestamps are shown for each reply. Replying to a note requires item.notes.add; replying to a comment requires item.threads.add.

Editing and Deleting

The author of a thread (or message) can edit or delete their own content without any additional permission. For other users:

  • Editing or deleting a comment requires the item.threads.edit or item.threads.delete permission.
  • Editing or deleting a note requires the item.notes.edit or item.notes.delete permission.

Visibility

Reading comments requires the item.threads.read permission. Reading notes requires the item.notes.read permission — a user who can read comments is not automatically shown notes.

Permissions

Comments and notes are governed by two separate permission channels:

  • item.threads.* — add / edit / delete / read for comments.
  • item.notes.* — add / edit / delete / read for notes.

Both can be configured per-member, per-role, per-group, or per-audience, and via item policies.
